Course description:

The Torres Chess and Music Academy, a 501c (3) non-profit organization, is pleased to be running this very special chess class designed and taught by nationally renowned chess instructor Chris Torres. Students will receive the best training available and take part in class tournaments with awards given at the end of each semester.  The Torres Method places an emphasis on achieving rapid chess improvement in an environment that is structured, competitive and fun for the student.

Teacher Bio:

Chris Torres is a nationally renowned scholastic chess coach teaching in the San Francisco Bay Area. His classes have attracted players of strengths ranging from rank beginners to world champions. Working as chess professional since 1998, Chris is widely recognized as one of the main driving forces behind the explosion in popularity and sudden rise in quality of scholastic chess in California. Currently, Chris Torres has the ranking of candidate master and serves as the President of the Torres Chess and Music Academy. Mr. Torres’ hobbies include playing classical guitar and getting his students to appear on the national top 100 chess rating lists. In 2009 Chris Torres coached for the National Elementary Chess Champion team at Mission San Jose Elementary School in Fremont, California. Torres Chess and Music Academy schools have also produced 14 Calchess Scholastic State Champion Teams in various age groups during the last 6 years. No other chess education organization in California has been as successful over the same period.

Since 1998 Chris Torres has taught 6 individual national champions as well as led multiple school teams to win national championship titles. In addition, Chris Torres has directed and taught at 10 different schools which have been California State Champions at chess. In 2011 and 2012, several former and current students of Chris Torres have been selected to represent the United States at the World Youth Chess Championships. Mr. Torres’ hobbies include playing classical guitar and getting his students to appear on the national top 100 chess rating lists.
