Born on March 9, 1943, Robert James Fischer is widely regarded as one of the greatest chess players in history. Bobby Fischer’s many impressive chess accomplishments include becoming a grandmaster at just 15 years of age, winning the U.S. Chess Championship eight times and becoming a World Champion by defeating Boris Spassky in 1972 in what was called the “Match of the Century.”

Today’s Puzzle Worthy Position comes from Bobby Fischer’s victory over J.F. Bacardi at the 1956 US Amateur Championship. Bacardi (black) had just played 26… f5 leaving Fischer (white) with a mate in 3. Can you finish the game out like Bobby Fischer?

White to move and mate in 3* (Fischer vs Bacardi, R2 of the US Amateur Championship, Asbury Park, New Jersey, 5/25/1956).

*There are three different moves that will work as the first move in this mate-in-3 combination.
