I have fun on Fridays nurturing young minds at Very Sunny Academy in Foster City, California. Each week, I bring my chess equipment and guide a group of passionate young learners on their chess journey. Most classes begin by examining a fundamental endgame. Then it’s onto looking at the tactical ideas in a short classic game before the students play their own serious games. As these chess games finish, I help the children to understand their mistakes and guide them into discovering improvements.
Over the last two years, I have witnessed this group’s growth not just as youth chess players, but as individuals poised to face challenges both on and off the chessboard. I am certain that their journey to become better chess players, will pave the way for dreams to be realized, as they look to the future with newfound confidence. In time, I am confident that many of these talented youngsters will leave their mark on the California scholastic chess scene.
